About Ben's jammin' Art Project
Vision - Our vision is to help youth explore, define, and pursue their natural talent and passion for the arts.
Mission - Our mission is to provide art supplies, musical instruments, and instruction to children with natural talent and a passion for the arts, but not the means. We are creating an arts and music resource to partner with established organizations already involved in the lives of children.
It is our goal to help our youth find enjoyment in the arts and to help them excel to the best of their abilities. We will work toward our goal using three approaches to be accessible to as many students as possible.
Ben’s Jammin’ in the Schools
School budgets are being cut this year. Art and music programs often are severely cut or eliminated. If students are to have an opportunity to learn a musical instrument or an art technique in school, the instruments and supplies need to be available.
A school music program can only provide a limited number of instruments. New instruments are very expensive; repair and maintenance is an additional cost to the school. One solution is to have students rent an instrument. This limits access to learning to those families with sufficient income to pay the fees. Because the number of instruments is limited, students must share the instrument or postpone learning until an instrument becomes available. Sharing an instrument eliminates home practices, a necessity to mastering an instrument. Placing students on a wait list often curtails their interest and a learning opportunity is lost.
BJAP will supply donated instruments that have been repaired and refurbished to public and private schools in need. If the school has a repair budget we will donate instruments as is. We will work with the schools to ascertain their needs and work to fill those needs by increasing public awareness and coordinating donations.
Art departments suffer the same fate as music departments; their budgets are routinely cut to balance the needs of the academic budget. Every year hundreds of teachers spend their own money to buy supplies for their classrooms.
BJAP will work with the schools and the teachers to find out their needs and give them art supplies donated by the community or purchased with moneys raised by BJAP.
Ben’s Jammin’ in the Community
BJAP is working with local organizations, such as Albany Girls and Boys Club, to expand their programs by donating art supplies and facilitating after school group music lessons. Our goal is to service more organizations in our community who are struggling for supplies and who would like to include instrumental lessons and jam sessions. BJAP will add more organizations as the art supplies, instruments and volunteers become available.
Ben’s Jammin’ for Individual Youth
We know that a lot of students who are interested in art and music do not participate in school programs. Whether they think it is not cool, or their academic schedule conflicts, or they have family reasons, a school program does not fulfill their needs. Others may have learned the basics in school, but want to pursue advanced training that is unavailable.
BJAP wants to give these individuals an opportunity to pursue their interests in music and art too. We will work with local music lesson teachers and art rooms to provide individual and group lessons. To qualify for assistance, individuals must be recommended by a teacher, pastor, or other adult leader from the community.
